In order to facilitate assembly of the individual parts of a ratchet, which can be engaged and disengaged, for fishing reels and at the same time to make the structure of the ratchet simpler, the turning knob 21 of the ratchet is connected by means of at least two radially resilient spreading arms 24 via snap-in fastening to a discoid part 23 which supports a resilient tongue 22 which can be optionally made to engage with and disengage from a toothed wheel 35 by means of corresponding actuation of the turning knob 21. The toothed wheel 35 can be coupled to the spool 14 which can be rotated by hand and accommodates the fishing line. To eliminate the axial play of the components of the ratchet in the bore in the wall 12 of the reel casing, the turning knob 21 is provided which is made of plastic, has an end wall 29 which is situated opposite the reel casing wall 12 and is plate-shaped, the outer circumferential edge 30 of the said end wall 29 being flexible in an axially elastic fashion and being held against the outside of the reel casing wall 12 in a cushioned fashion. The spring force of the edge 30 on the turning knob 21 also holds a knob-shaped projection 31 on the discoid part 23 in engagement with one of two recesses on the inside of the reel casing wall 12, the resilient tongue 22 in consequence being fixed in its active and inactive positions.
