A method for determining the density and the moduli of the material of a component part involves the initial measurement of the velocity of longitudinal waves in the material of the component part. A material surface of the component part has a material having a known density and known longitudinal-wave velocity applied to it. The interface between the known material and the material of the component part is then insonified with longitudinal waves and the amplitude of the longitudinal waves reflected at the interface of the two materials is registered. Finally, the second material of the interface, as seen in the insonification direction, is replaced by a third material, especially air, and the amplitude of the longitudinal sound waves reflected at the interface to the third material is registered. Based on the ratio of the velocities of the longitudinal waves in the first and second material, and on the ratio of the amplitudes of the longitudinal waves reflected at the interfaces, it is possible to determine the density of the material of the component part. If, in addition, the velocity for transverse waves in the material of the component part is registered, it is also possible to determine the shearing modulus and the modulus of elasticity of the material of the component part in a non-destructive manner.
