In order to create a distance meter for measuring and determining lengths and distances, in particular on reduced drawings, principally maps, it is provided that said meter consists of a preferably rod-shaped housing (3) having a grip section for holding a wheel-shaped or spherical rotation element (7, 31) which rolls on the reduced plan. Also provided is a pulse generator unit (9) for generating pulses corresponding to the rotary movement of the wheel-shaped or spherical rotation element (7, 31). Furthermore, the distances thus measured can be reproduced on a display unit (15) for numerical representation. The distance meter is preferably provided with a conversion unit (13) and an input unit (11), in order to obtain a representation on the display unit (15) of the actual basic distance after inputting the map scale (Figure 1).
