A gas valve 5 supplying the burner 3 of a water heater is opened in response to water flowing through a venturi 19, the reduced pressure at the venturi acting on a diaphragm 16 coupled to a valve operating rod 18. Opening of the valve is modified by a throttling assembly 11 arranged between the venturi and diaphragm. The assembly (Fig. 2) contains a valve element 22 coupled to a diaphragm 26 and to a spring- biassed piston 24. The valve element closes when low pressure acts on the diaphragm, to allow an initial rapid opening of the gas valve 5 (appropriate for ignition of the burner). A bypass opening 25 then operates to provide a slower subsequent rate of supply. IMAGE
