ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn apparatus and method for connecting the end sections of twosuperconductors which are to be cooled down to cryogenic operatingtemperatures wherein each of the superconductors contains at least onesuperconducting conductor filament embedded in a matrix of normal-conductingstabilizing material is disclosed. The ends of the superconductingconductor filaments are stripped at least partially of the stabilizingmaterial, are directly placed together and welded to each other, and anelectrically highly-conducting bridge of normal-conducting material isformed between the stabilizing material of the superconductors. In orderto assure an extremely low-resistance connection between the ends of thesuperconducting conductor filaments, it is provided that these ends bejoined together by ultrasonic metal welding. In particular, the endscan be arranged in a special welding form and at least partially welded tothe welding form.
