Abstract of the DisclosureA motion-adaptive intepolation method for amotion video signal includes the steps of computing arepresentative motion vector of a moving object by using acertain number of motion vectors, and implementing amodification of the representative motion vector such thata variation of the representative motion vector at apresent frame period with respect to the representativemotion vector at a previous frame period is limited to apredetermined range, thus increasing the number of theframes per unit of time by using the modifiedrepresentative motion vector. Further, a device forimplementing the motion-adaptive interpolation includesmotion estimation circuitry for evaluating an estimatedmotion of the motion video signal. The motion estimationcircuitry has a function to compute the representativemotion vector by using original motion vectors, a functionto implement a modification of the representative motionvector so as to limit its variation of a presentrepresentative motion vector with respect to a previousone, and a function to create a motion vector formotion-adaptive interpolation. Thus, it is possible toprovide an excellent smooth movement reproduction and highresolution in the moving area within the frame of themotion video signal.
