A process for producing aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid by reacting a liquid mixture of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, an alkali metal salt of an aromatic hydroxy compound, and a free aromatic hydroxy compound with carbon dioxide. This process enables to obtain the product with an enhanced selectivity.
