The compartmentalised switching cell comprises an apparatus carriage (3) which can be driven in and out and which, in the driven-in state, engages by means of its driving-in contacts, through compartment wall openings, with installation parts which are arranged behind in the stationary cell part. When the apparatus carriage is driven out, the compartment wall openings (4) are covered by covering panels (6). Each covering panel (6) has two operating rods (10, 10' and 11, 11' respectively) which are connected to one another on each compartment wall side, at their upper and lower ends (9, 9'), by in each case one chain (13, 13') which is guided over a sprocket wheel (12, 12') which is supported on the compartment wall (2) such that it can rotate. When the chain is operated by the apparatus carriage, the covering panels execute a movement in opposite directions, the masses of the covering panels being balanced with respect to one another. The compartment wall openings are covered by insulating material panels (21), which are constructed as drop shutters, when the apparatus carriage is driven out. The switching cell provides a high level of safety for the operating personnel against touching live parts and can be designed in a simple and economical manner to be proof against arcing faults.
