A process and device for atomising of a high-pressure liquid jet emerging from a nozzle, in particular for material treatment such as erosion, deburring, cutting or boring are to be improved such that, by increasing the jet dynamics, a higher erosion performance is possible for the same pump power, or for lower pressures and for a lower delivery rate. This is achieved in that the effective cross-section upstream of the nozzle is periodically, if appropriate with adjustable frequency, throttled and enlarged again, without interrupting the cross-section between the nozzle and high-pressure pump, by an amount predetermined according to the pump pressure and nozzle cross-section and distance from the surface to be treated, solely by means of the energy of the supplied liquid.
