In a method for switching off electrostatic precipitators for cleaning the vapours from driers for brown coal, after the running-dry of the drier has finished, water in a nebulised form is sprayed into the electrostatic precipitator, the operating voltage being brought to a value which is necessary for the precipitation of the water particles and the precipitation of the dust which may detach itself from the electrodes, this voltage being maintained until at least the major part of the dust located in the precipitation electrodes is wetted by water, which is likewise precipitated, to such an extent that dust formation is avoided.
