A conference system for telecommunications terminals operating in a simultaneous bidirectional mode is realised by use of a digital switching system. A processor effects the read or write operations of the data on a bus line. Telephonic speech is sampled to form digital data frames for transmission on a number of channels. A number of terminal circuits receive the data via ports and a time division multiplexed data bus permits exchange of the data or a sequential sharing basis. Memory circuits record the selected data frames and a processor controls the ports to effect read and write operations into the memory. This allows the selected data to be routed in an output signal to the ports for the appropriate destination.
