NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formulaI(R1-R3 are H or lower alkyl; X is H, Cl or Br). EXAMPLE:N'-[3-Choro-4-(2-propenylthio)phenyl)-N-methoxy-N-methylurea. USE:Selective herbicide having photo-synthesis inhibiting action, extremely low phytotoxicity to rice plant, and high selectivity. Since the migration of the compound downward in the soil is extremely slow, it exhibits the herbicidal effect against various weeds (e.g. monochoria, false pimpernel, toothcup, etc.) as well as barnyard grass which generates near the surface of the paddy field soil, and does not reach the root of the rice plant. Consequently, the phytotoxicity of the compound can be reduced. PROCESS:The objective compound of formulaIis prepared by reacting the compound of formula II with N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine in the absence of solvent or in an organic solvent such as benzene, toluene, etc., or water, or their mixture.
