Process for de-odourising waste water (effluent) which has an unpleasant odour caused by organic sulphur compounds, characterised in that the waste water is treated with a concentration of free nitric acid of 1 - 30% by weight, preferably 2 - 10% by weight, under a pressure of 2 to 100 bar, preferably between 5 to 50 bar, and at temperatures between 100 DEG to 300 DEG C, preferably 150 DEG to 250 DEG C.
