A device for axially pressing a workpiece attached to a work-holding fixture of a work spindle of a machine tool such as a lathe or cylindrical grinder contains an axially displaceable sleeve which can be displaced by a power-actuated means. The axial pressure force of the power-actuated means can be adjusted between two values, specifically a small value which guarantees safe feeding and clamping of the workpiece by hand and a large value which ensures reliable holding of the workpiece during the machining.
