PURPOSE:To thermally reform tar generated in a coke oven at a low cost and produce binder pitch, etc., by passing a coke oven gas through a space of another carbonization chamber in a process in the latter half of carbonization. CONSTITUTION:A gas passage 5 communicating with an adjacent carbonization chamber (18b) is provided near the oven top at the coke side end of a carbonization chamber (18a) and the upper space (2a) of the carbonization chamber is connected to the upper space (2b) of the adjacent carbonization chamber. In operation of the coke oven, carbonization cycle of the mutual adjacent carbonization chambers (18a) and (18b) is shifted by about 1/2. When one carbonization chamber (18a) is in the former half of the carbonization, the another adjacent carbonization chamber (18b) is in the latter half of the carbonization. A gas, produced in the carbonization chamber (18a) and containing much tar is led to the carbonization chamber (18b) at about 50-70 deg.C higher temperature in the latter half of the carbonization to carry out thermal reforming. Thereby, the ratio of portions insoluble in quinoline of the generated tar is remarkably increased.
