PURPOSE: To constitute an appropriate substitution surface which can be plotted with the small number of the substitution surfaces by adjusting the rate of length to width on the substitution surface generated from a basic form on a picture boundary extending in various angles. CONSTITUTION: The foundation of an image, which is shown by binary picture elements arranged in the raster of a square, is formed by one diagonal line having a width equal to that of one picture element. But, the picture element image has the form of several vertical lines because of the straight propagation of the raster representation. When the image is to be enlarged, the image is to be changed into a non-raster-like intermediate image at first. Then, the intermediate image is mapped on a raster pattern having required new resolution. The non-raster-like intermediate image is constituted by elements called as the substitution surface and it is placed instead of the several picture elements of the picture element image.
