PURPOSE:To observe a sample in its original form, by providing a cryogen storage section around the held sample to fit the sample to a sample exchanger for an electron microscope. CONSTITUTION:A body 23 and a holder 24 are removed from a bearer 22 secured to the sample excahnge chamber 9 of a electron microscope or the like. Liquefied nitrogen or the like is injected into a cryogen storage section 44 defined by a bellows 43. A sample cylinder 4 holding a frozen sample is attached to the top of the body 23 in such a manner that the cylinder is cooled by the cryogen. The body 23 is fitted to the bearer 22. The sample exchange chamber 9 is evacuated of gas. The sample is thereafter protruded into the chamber 9, grasped by the grabber of an exchange rod, moved to a sample mounting position in the electron microscope or the like and mounted in the position. The moisture of the sample is thus kept from being evaporated, so that the sample is prevented from being deformed. Therefore, the sample can be observed in its original form.
