PURPOSE: To maintain compatibility with conventional television broadcasting by transmitting a stereoscopic video through two channels. CONSTITUTION: When a viewer operates a channel selector 22, the signal of a selected channel in a broadcasting signal received by an antenna 21 is outputted from a tuner 23. This signal is demodulated by a demodulator 24, processed by a signal processor 25 and inputted to a liquid crystal driver 26. The output of the driver 26 is inputted to liquid crystal 48 or 54, by way of a switch 27. Light beams projected to a screen 57 from light sources 46 and 52 through lens systems 47 and 53 and the liquid crystals 48 and 54 are polarized by 90 deg. to each other. When information that the broadcasting is stereoscopic exists in the signal of the selected channel, it is fetched by a data separation circuit 28 to energize an auxiliary circuit 44 by a stereoscopic program data identifier 30. In addition, a tuning controller 29 controls the tuner 34 of a circuit part 44 to tune the other stereoscopic video to a broadcasting channel. The viewer watches the video through polarizing lenses 58 and 59.
