PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost colored sintered material having high strength and high toughness free from color shading by blending ZrO2 powder with CeO2 powder to give an intermediate mixture, adding Cr2O3 powder to the mixture, grinding, molding and calcining. CONSTITUTION:Powder consisting of 2-16mol% CeO2 powder and the rest of ZrO2 powder as main components or consisting essentially of ZrO2 powder is blended to give an intermediate mixture. Then 75-98wt.% of the intermediate mixture is blended with 2-25wt.% Cr2O3 powder, ground, molded and calcined to give the aimed sintered colored zirconia ceramic. When content of CeO2 in the intermediate mixture is 2mol%, zirconia crystal of tetragonal system is unstable and strength of sintered zirconia ceramic of monoclinic system is extremely reduced during cooling process after sintering. When the content of CeO2 exceeds 16mol%, content of zirconia crystal of cubic system is increased and strength of the sintered colored zirconia ceramic is reduced.
