A proposal is made for supporting the thermal bottom shield on the bottom liner in gas-cooled pebble bed reactors in a way which prevents the thermally induced expansions of the bottom shield which occur in the operation of the reactor from introducing appreciable forces into the bottom liner. This is achieved by arranging that the thermal bottom shield is a polygonal plate which is mounted on roller bearings which are arranged on the bottom liner.
