A compressed penetrator (1) consists of bundled heavy-metal wires (21) lying in the longitudinal direction of the penetrator (1). These wires (21) lie in a thin matrix made of copper. In the region of the ogive (10), the wires (21) end at an angle (12) of 60-90@ with respect to the surface (11). The shock waves which occur on striking the target lead to material separation initially at the tail (5) of the penetrator (1). In contrast, the ogive (10) remains intact. IMAGE
