Method for removing salts and encrusted grime from external or internal sculptured or unsculptured stone structures or facings, whether or not having particular artistic or aesthetic value, in order to remove any substances that are damaging to the stone material, soluble salts and encrusted grime, without harming either the natural patines or the outermost layer of the stone material, using demineralized water. This water is nebulized or sprayed onto the facing or structure; allowed to trickle down it; collected at the foot of the building; filtered to remove suspended solid particles; demineralized in a suitable exchange resin apparatus to remove the harmful ions that have been collected by dissolving them off the facing; saturated with the natural soluble ions constituting the facing or structure by passing it over a bed of material, broken rock or stone, of the same kind as the facing or wall; and fed back onto the facing or structure undergoing treatment, in a continuous cycle until the salts and encrusted grime have been removed to the desired degree.
