Abstract of the DisclosureA method and device for determining in-siturheological properties of earth materials are dis-closed. A low-angle cone penetrometer is pushed intoa predrilled cylindrical pilot hole of smallerdiameter, to cause enlargement of the pilot hole. Inone embodiment, the load applied to the cone is heldconstant and the relationship between the conepenetration and the time is recorded. In anotherembodiment, either the load on the cone or the rateof penetration into the pilot hole is held constantand the relationship between the penetration or thepenetration rate and the resistance of the materialagainst the enlargement of the pilot hole isrecorded. The rheological properties of the material,such as the creep and time or rate-dependentdeformation and strength properties, are then deducedfrom the recorded data.
