A catalyst for synthesizing hydrocarbons from CO and H2 is prepared by incorporating limited amounts of silica or a silica precursor with a composition comprising cobalt and an inorganic refractory support comprised primarily of titania. The catalyst is active at lower temperatures than comparable silica-free catalysts, and produces more C5+ hydrocarbons and less methane.
