An armour-plated component for protection against shells or explosions has a lightweight supporting layer (3) on the rear face and an outer surface layer (4) on the front side. The armour plate (1) consists of a ceramic composite with a carrier layer (2) on the rear face. Aramid or glass reinforced plastic forms the carrier layer (2) which is bonded to the ceramic material by a rubber adhesive. USE/ADVANTAGE - Protection of personnel or objects against projectiles or explosions in public places, eg airports. The outer layer disguises the armour plating.
