In the prodn. of charge-transfer mesophases (I) from coal tar, coal tar pitch and similar polycyclic aromatics, the isotropic aromatics are mixed, in their molten or dissolved state, with electron-donating or electron-accepting cpds. and the mixt. treated, opt. at elevated temp. The mesophase produced from the charge-transfer complexes are sepd. from the isotropic phase in the usual way, e.g. by decanting. More specifically, the electron-accepting or electron-donating cpds. are mixed with the aromatic mixts. as inductors and the mixt. treated at above 350 deg.C until a liq. mesophase, produced from the charge-transfer complexes, is formed by polycondensation. Nitrated aromatics are used as electron-accepting cpds. Pptn. of the charge-transfer mesophases occurs in several stages, opt. with different inductors, in which mesophases produced in each stage are removed. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) can be further processed to C and graphite fibres, graphite foils and other highly pure carbonaceous mouldings. (I) have a low m.pt.
