A safety device for explosives e.g. pyrotechnic materials, has an associated laser which is directed onto the explosive material so that a liq. layer is penetrated, causing cavitation bubbles at the liq.-explosive sepn. face. The resultant liq. jets impart, together with expansion shock, high mechanical forces and temperatures, which result in detonation. The liq. layer can be positioned so that the contact point with the laser light cannot cause detonation. ADVANTAGE - The safety device is simple and economical in construction, and is reliable in operation.
