Floating sludge on the surface of a sewage settlement tank is collected and pushed by a pivotally mounted shield, after initial lowering into a position dependent on water level, towards a lateral entry aperture into a discharge channel for conveying sludge to a collection point. The aperture entrance is controlled by a pivotal flap valve movable by a gravity-loaded lever contacting the underside of a lever tiltable by cable-tension, and after sludge transfer returned to an upright flap-valve closing position. ADVANTAGE - Prevents discharge of too little sludge or too much water.
