In order to produce an aspherical surface on an optical element 10, material is deposited by vacuum evaporation onto the surface of the element. The mask is moved in its plane in an oscillatory motion during the deposition and distributed openings 20 are made in the mask giving it a local permeability which is a direct function of the thickness of material to be deposited in the corresponding zone of the surface. In particular, the method makes it possible to produce telescope mirrors in several pieces. IMAGE
