PURPOSE:To remarkably enhance the degree of removal of TOC by using immobilized methane oxidation bacteria and treating waste water incorporating alcohol wherein the concn. of TOC is specified value or below. CONSTITUTION:Waste water incorporating alcohol having =30mg/l concn. of TOC is treated by using immobilized methane oxidation bacteria 7. The holding amount of an exoenzyme e.g. dehydrogenase is made large in the inside of an immobilization carrier by immobilizing the methane oxidation bacteria described below with the comprehensive immobilization material and decomposition of alcohol is promoted. The methane oxidation bacteria secrete large amounts of enzyme such as dehydrogenase which decomposes alcohol such as methanol incorporated in waste water. In this case, catalytic reaction of the enzyme is a main reaction and the propagation reaction of the methane oxidation bacteria for replenishing enzyme is slightly caused. In this case, TOC component such as polysaccharides produced by the methane oxidation bacteria is large in mol.wt. and is not washed out to the outside of the carrier. Since the bacterial cell itself is not washed out to the outside of the carrier, TOC of treated water is remarkably lowered.
