METHOD FOR CULTURING HAIRY ROOT OF SESAMUM INDICUM L.

PURPOSE:To obtain an antimicrobial substance which is active against fungi and has hitherto never been produced by cells of Sesamum indicum L. at all by transforming the cells of Sesamum indicum L. with a microorganism of the genus Agrobacterium holding an Ri plasmid, preculturing the prepared transformant and culturing the resultant hairy root. CONSTITUTION:Cells of Sesamum indicum L. are initially transformed with a bacterium (Agrobacterium.rhizogenes ATCC 15834), belonging to the genus Agrobacterium and holding an Ri plasmid and then precultured. The resultant hairy root obtained by the aforementioned preculture is further cultured. Furthermore, the cells of the Sesamum indicum L. are transformed by applying the aforementioned microorganism to root taking parts of seedlings prepared by, e.g. sterile germination of seeds of the Sesamum indicum L.
