PURPOSE:To obtain a vehicle-distance measuring apparatus which can accurately detect the distance between vehicles quickly and an impact buffer apparatus using the vehicle-distance measuring apparatus by expanding an air bag, and extruding the air bag to the outside of an automobile based on the distance between the vehicles which is measured based on the ratio between the longitudinal length and the lateral length of the image of an object by the principle of astigmatism. CONSTITUTION:The image of an object B is received with a distance measuring part I. Then, the image undergoes astigmatism in an optical system 1. The image is detected with a light receiving body 2, and the electric signals in the longitudinal and lateral directions are obtained. The distance D between vehicles is computed in an operating part 3 based on the ratio between the longitudinal and lateral lengths. When the distance D between the vehicles satisfies the dangerous condition preset in a processing part H, an actuating signal is sent into a gas generator G for an air bag.
