MANUFACTURE OF PARTICLE REINFORCED TI-AL INTERMETALLIC COMPOUND

PURPOSE:To obtain a particle reinforced Ti-Al intermetallic compound uniformly dispersed and compounded by adding a specified amt. of V to mixed powder of pure Al and ceramic particles in a specified ratio, melting this mixed powder, executing stirring and solidifying, adding sponge titanium constituted of Ti and Al in a specified ratio to the solidified stock and melting it into uniform stock. CONSTITUTION:The one obtd. by adding, by weight, 1 to 5% V or Mn as a third element to mixed powder having the blending ratio of pure Al: ceramic particles = 95 to 75:5 to 25% is melted in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, and this molten metal is sufficiently stirred and is thereafter solidified. Next, this solidified stock is blended with sponge titanium so as to regulate Ti:Al=85 to 60:15 to 40%, and these are jointly melted into homogeneous stock. In this way, the material in which the ceramic particles are uniformly dispersed, free from the variation of material strength and having uniform quality and reliability can be obtd., and in which hardness is uniformly and exceedingly improved and wear resistance is also improved as well as heat resistance and corrosion resistance.
