An embossing machine produces fine motives at set intervals on a film, using a revolving cylinder which is recessed to hold the embossing die. This die does not cover the whole circumference of the cylinder; each time the cylinder makes a revolution a gap occurs between it and a backing roller and near to the recess. The effective length of the die occupies over 50% of the cylinder circumference; during one phase of each cylinder revolution there is a periodic movement between the film and the die; a control device produces this relative movement whose amplitude is adjustable. The film (1), pref. coated PVC or polyester, to be embossed at regular intervals, e.g. for diffraction grating, is unreeled (4) and passed between the embossing cylinder (7) and its backing roller (8) which applied pressure. The film (1) moves at a tangent (9) to both rollers (7,8). The cylinder (7) has the gap (10) in its circumference. The remainder of the cylinder (11) is smooth to support the die (12). Both cylinders (7) and die (12) are preferably heated to suit the material of the film (1) used. The effective length of the die (12) is over 50% of the cylinder (7) circumference, being limited by the smooth length (11) which enables it (12) to be attached quickly. When the gap (14) is opposite the roller (8) the film is free. The control mechanism (24) produces the periodic lift-off of the film from the die (12) e.g. by a cam device (25) and arm (28).
