To maintain a constant spindle rotary speed, at the workstations of a ring spinner or twister, the energy supply to the drives (4) for the spindles (2) is adjusted to compensate for any spindle speed deviation from nominal values. The energy supply to the spindle drives (4) is increased in proportion to the increase in slip at the spindles (2), with controlled monitoring of the energy supply. The increase in energy supply to the spindle drives (4) uses the cops wt. as a guide value, and the yarn thickness or the traveller wt. is used as a guide value to monitor the energy supply. The actual rotary speed of at least one spindle (2, 2') can be taken as the guide value to monitor the energy supply to the drives (4). A programmable guide value transmitter is connected to at least one spindle drive (4) through a controlled energy supply unit (7), to give a program control. The guide value transmitter can form the guide values from the operating parameters of the assembly (1). ADVANTAGE - The operation reduces the effect of slip on the spindles to keep constant running and/or a consistent yarn prod.
