Electro=optical phase modulation adjustment for Sagnac interferometer - using subdivided electrode to which modulating voltage is applied overall prior to selective disconnection from one or more parts
Electro=optical phase modulation adjustment for Sagnac interferometer - using subdivided electrode to which modulating voltage is applied overall prior to selective disconnection from one or more parts
An integrated optical waveguide (21) set into a substrate (20) passes between an earthed electrode (22) and a phase-modulating electrode subdivided into a main part (23) and a number of subsidiary parts (24-26) sepd. by uniform gaps. Overall lengths (L5) of the two electrodes (22 and 23-26) are equal. The phase shift is adjusted in steps by application of the modulating voltage (29) selectively to one or more of the parts (23-26) of the subdivided electrode. USE/ADVANTAGE - In Sagnac interferometer for absolute rotational speed measurement. Soldering process exposing integrated optical circuit to damage by flux solvents is eliminated.
