The l.c.d. has two series-connected optical cells (1, 2) one of which is active (1) and is controllable to display information, while the other is passive (2) and has no electrodes for reproducing information. The products of the difference between the ordinary (no) and extraordinary (ne) refraction indices and the cell layer thicknesses (d1, d2) are of different sizes. Control of the active cell (1) is in a voltage range substantially above the extreme voltage of the transmission voltage characteristic. USE/ADVANTAGE - Reduced switching on and off times. Much lower voltage increase required for control. Copes with low temperatures as can arise when used in motor vehicle.
