A method is proposed for determining the flow speed of the cooling water in a heat exchanger in order to determine the cleaning efficiency of cleaning bodies of a heat exchanger which for the purpose of cleaning the tubes of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger in the circuit are fed into the water inlet, are flushed through the tubes, are caught in the water outlet, and after traversing a lock for re-feeding and/or inspection are fed again into the heat inlet. In this process, the cooling water temperature at the tube outlet is measured continuously or at a preselectable time interval at the heat exchanger tube, and the cooling water temperature at the tube inlet of the same tube is likewise measured continuously or at the time interval, and correlation analysis is used to determine a time difference between a sufficiently conspicuous temperature variation at the start of the tube and the recurrence of said variation at the end of the tube, which time difference is utilised to measure the speed of through-flow taking account of the tube length.
