The torque converter (2) includes a shunting clutch (5) which couples the input- and output shafts and enables the engine to provide max. retardation without stalling. The engine torque is monitored, as is the throttle setting. If the retradation is above a set level then the shunting clutch is applied. A simple control (A) applies the servo force required for the clutch. The transmission has two control modes; normal running and retardation. A control valve (10) operates the hydraulic clutch cylinder. ADVANTAGE - Safer driving feel; improved retardation control.
