Disclosed is the cloning and sequencing of various polypeptides from the genome of the hepatitis C virus. The polypeptides are prepared as non-fusion proteins in high yields. The polypeptide originating in the core protein is soluble under physiological conditions. Since the polypeptides contain no foreign protein fractions, they are particularly suitable for use in test kits and as vaccines.
