Reducing acid and sulphate content of water in overburden deposits - by introducing nutrients into overburden from lignite mines to promote growth of bacteria which reduce sulphate(s) to hydrogen sulphide and insoluble sulphide(s)
Nutrients are introduced into the dumped material for the growth of bacteria which reduce sulphates to hydrogen sulphide and insoluble sulphides. These nutrients are in the form of sewage sludge or sludge from the processing of sugar beet and/or lignite. The free oxygen content of the dumped material is reduced by covering the deposit with an impermeable layer. Waste material containing iron sulphide may be built into the lower layers of the deposited material, and on it organic substances are spread in a layer of a suitable thickness and/or in an irregular distribution. Organic substances are in particular introduced into the boundary regions of the flow of the ground water in the deposited material. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in reducing the contaminaton of ground water in deposits of overburden material, esp. overburden from lignite mining operations.
