Solid fuels are gasified (A) in a known manner using O2 and steam with (B) the crude gas (CG) obtd. being cooled to 20-220 deg. C to obtain a condensate (CDE) rich in water, (C) sepg. this CDE and evaporating at least part of the CDE to obtain a CDE steam and a saline soln. and (D) combusting the saline soln. and adding at least part of the CDE steam to the purified CG. The CDE is pref. formed from virtually all NH3 before evapn.. At least part of the CDE steam is condensed and then contacted directly with the purified CG, Air is sepd. into an O2-rich steam which is fed to the gasification step and an N2-rich steam, which is added to the purified CG. ADVANTAGE - An environmentally friendly purificn. process for the CG leaving very little waste for disposal and virtually no waste water.
