The method control unit with a terminal (40) is used for the input of designation data. A computer (2) converts the designation data in to control information. A laser (18), which is dependent on the control information produced by the computer, produces the beam (L). An X-Y deflection unit (10-16) is provided for the laser beam, which dependent on the control information, deflects the laser beam in the plane of a film (24) to be designated, and a film guide, on which the film (24) with the carrier layer (26) facing the laser beam (L) is guided and held. ADVANTAGE - Gives clean, clearly readable designation, which can be read uniformly well, independent of brightness of background.
