Measuring refractive index, stress profiles of transparent inhomogeneous bodies - by passing parallel light through body embedded in index-matched medium, aperture and polarisation beam divider to receiver
Measuring the refractive indices and/or stress profiles of transparent inhomogenous bodies involves embedding the body (3) in an index-matched medium and illuminating at last part of its rod dia. perpendicular to the rod axis with parallel light. After passing through the rod and an imageing lens (4), the light is passed through a gap (5) via a polarisaton detecting polarisation beam divider (1) to a receiver (5). The receiver determines the centroid of the diffraction image produced by the gap. Polarisation direction influencing devices are added to cause quenching of one direction. The degree of the elements required is a measure of the stress profile in the rod. The light passing through the divider is used to determine the refractive index profile. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables combination of refractive index and stress profiles and elimination of problems associated with beam deflection in object.
