The method of checking the position of a test object on a carrier (12) involves illuminating the object (11) with a beam of defined propagation characteristic and energy content. The intensity of the light reflected and/or scattered fromt he object is used to determine the object position. The carrier is brought into a defined position w.r.t the light source (23). This position, the light source arrangement and the position of the detector (29) are varied w.r.t. each other to produce a defined intensity value at the detector. This intensity has a super imposed relationship to the deviation of the object fromt he desired position. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for positioning containers for automatic drinks filling. Reliable position checking with very short measurement times so as not to delay conveyor flow.
