Appts. joining together or compacting metal parts, using sonic or ultrasonic vibrations of a sonatrode (10), consists of adjustable intermeshing counter electrode (11) and blocking element (12) which slide along the surfaces (20,21) of the sonotrode and, depending on the degree of intermeshing of the comb-like ends (16,17), form a variable area (22) into which the metal parts are located. The appts may have a sonotrode with a horizontal single surface (20) instead of a V-shaped surface with the electrode (11) and element (12) movable vertically and horizontally respectively to produce the work area. The degree of intermeshing is controlled by an adjustment unit which restricts the movement of the element (12) towards the electrode (11). USE/ADVANTAGE - Joining ends of electrical leads. Area (22) is easily adapted to cross-section of various leads without using any manual or expensive automatic device.
