The acoustic fields developed by the on-board equipment of watercraft, e.g. submarines (11), are plotted using a hydraulically actuated platform (7) capable of three-dimensional orientation and carrying hydrophones and proximity sensors. The platform is coupled by a telescopic mounting (6) to a drive unit (V) which provides vertical travel w.r.t. a rail (2). Longtudinal travel is effected by a horizontal drive unit (H) w.r.t. another rail (1). Acoustic scanning of the whole outer shell of the craft is controlled by a stored topographic programme enabling identification of sensitive areas. USE/ADVANTAGE - Readily applicable to waterborne craft in drydock or at quayside without need for complex support structures. Equipmetn is commerically available and minimises otherwise labour-intensive and costly operation leading to effective damping where required. Enabling effective countermeasures to be taken to avoid detection by enemy of detonation of acoustic mines.
