PURPOSE:To provide a Japanese lacquer (urushi) compsn. which is inexpensive and gives a coating film having excellent transparency, gloss etc., by mixing a co-condensate of a catechol homolog and cashew nut shell oil (derivative) with formaldehyde, with natural Japanese lacquer (urushi). CONSTITUTION:A catechol homolog, isomer, polyhydric phenol (e.g., hydroquinone, protocatechuic acid) or p-aminophenol (A) and cashew nut shell oil (derivative) (B) are mixed with formaldehyde (C). The mixture is reacted in the presence of an alkali catalyst to produce a co-condensate of formula I or II. The co-condensate is mixed with natural Japanese lacquer (urushi) to obtain the desired Japanese lacquer (urushi) compsn. In this way, the compsn. can be inexpensively produced, because the inexpensive component B is used as the raw material. Further, the compsn. is excellent in activity to enzyme, because the component A active to laccase is used.
