PURPOSE: To provide an improved process to prepare easily and in a high yield a cationic metal complex with a constrained geometry which is useful as a polymerization catalyst for an olefin. ;CONSTITUTION: A method to prepare a catalyst of the formula LMX+ XA-(wherein L is a substituted delocalized π bonded group which imparts a constrained geometry to the metal active site; M is a metal of Group 4 or of Lanthanide series in the periodic table; X is a hydride, or a hydrocarbyl, silyl or germyl group; and A- is an anion of a Lewis acid A having a relative acidity equal to or greater than phenyl bis(perfluorophenyl)borane) by bringing a derivative of a metal of Group 4 or Lanthanide series corresponding to the formula LMX2 (wherein L, M and X are as previously defined) into contact with the Lewis acid A.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
