Process for the direct synthesis of an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen by heterogeneous catalysis in a three-phase system which comprises directly reacting hydrogen and oxygen in the gaseous state under a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure at the surface of a solid heterogeneous catalyst suspended in the form of granules in a liquid aqueous phase, the catalyst consisting of a metal compound chosen from pure palladium or a combination of palladium with at least one other noble metal deposited on a support comprising at least one compound chosen from zirconium dioxide and superacidic zirconium dioxide. Catalyst and method of preparing the catalyst by impregnating the carrier granules by means of a palladium compound or the mixture of a compound of palladium with at least one compound from another noble metal followed by reduction of the palladium compound or mixture of palladium compound with at least one other noble metal by means of a gas stream containing hydrogen.
